A rhinoplasty is also commonly called a nose job; many people choose to have a rhinoplasty because they do not like the size or shape of their nose; however, this is not the only reason to have the surgery, and in fact, a good nose job can really help somebody who has breathing difficulties or sinus problems; this is because a deviated septum often causes such issues.
The septum is the thin piece of tissue found in the nose that separates the two nostrils; when this tissue is deviated it means it is displaced to one side such that the two sides of the nasal cavity are of unequal size; in severe cases a person with this problem can end up having many sinus infections, congested sinuses, and even breathing problems.
Fixing the nasal septum is important for many people as it improves their quality of life and reduces the incidence of nasal and sinus infections, which can be very debilitating; the nose may also be damaged due to an accident, and rhinoplasty can help remodel the structures to give an aesthetically pleasing nose that functions well.
A nose job can help fix many cosmetic issues related to the nose; for instance, a person may feel that their nose is crooked or too large in size; other reasons include a person wanting narrower nostrils or a straighter bridge to the nose; a rhinoplasty procedure can help you feel more confident and improve your self-esteem.
Types of nose jobs
There are two main types of nose jobs that people can have; either a closed or open rhinoplasty; the closed rhinoplasty is preferable if possible because scars will not be visible on the outside since all the cutting is done inside the actual nasal cavity.
While a closed nose job can work for many people as a way to change the size and shape the nose, this is not always the case, and sometimes a more invasive method is needed; in these cases an open rhinoplasty is needed in which the columella of the nose is cut and skin is pulled up from the nasal cartilage.
Your surgeon will be able to determine which rhinoplasty procedure will work best for your situation, and certainly in a complex case, the open may be recommended as the best option.
How do you prepare for a nose job?
The consultation will include your doctor taking careful note of your nose and all the structures involved that may be altered by the rhinoplasty; often many photos need to be taken and the doctor will ask about your full medical history.
It is also important that you do not take certain medications such as painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin for about 14 days before the surgery; this is because these drugs often increase your tendency to bleed, which could increase the risks of your surgery.

Recovery from a nose job
It will take longer to recover if general anesthesia was used and where you have a more complex procedure done; the nose will have a splint to maintain the structure and you can expect some pain and bleeding afterwards; recovery usually takes about a week for most people, and results are good.
